Cowboys & Engines
A steampunk short set in an alternate-history version of the American frontier in 1876.
Cade Ballard, the former ambassador from the nation of Texas, and Guinivere Wheeler, a smart and dangerous con artist, fall in together to protect a scientist whose pet project – the Temporal Engine – threatens to destroy entire cities if stolen by the wrong hands.
We are producing this under the SAG Short Film contract, which means we can use both union and non-union actors. Even though allowed under the contract, base pay will NOT be deferred. Base pay will be $200/day. Rates are negotiable for name talent.
Production is slated to begin in late October. We will be shooting for six days in Los Angeles and Nevada.Cade Ballard Male Lead 35-45 Race Open
Tall, fit and weathered, Cade is a tired old soldier who’s seen too much. Saving US President Abraham Lincoln from assassination by a crazed actor earned Cade worldwide notoriety, and he did everything in his power to hide from this unwanted fame. Cade is a dangerous man in a changing world, trying to find a direction.
Guinivere Wheeler Female Lead 24-32 Race Open
Smart, sexy and tough as nails, Guinivere has been many things in her life; a grifter, a card sharp, a gunfighter, a hooker… whatever time and necessity required. In many ways, Guinivere is the toughest character in the film. When she encounters the familiar face of Dr. Clay, the man who killed her mother, her normal drive for survival becomes a cold need for revenge at any cost.
Professor Nicholas Timéon Male Principal 55-70 Caucasian
A brilliant Southern gentleman from an old Louisiana Huguenot family, Timéon built a machine with amazing potential for good, only to see it perverted into an astonishing weapon. Thin and worn around the edges, Timéon has been on the run for some time, trying to protect himself and Mercy, his only living relative, from the men who want his knowledge, and his head. Southern dialect.
Mercy Timéon Female Co-Star 20-25 Caucasian
A no-nonsense Southern girl with a truly old soul, Mercy always seems to know a bit more than she lets on. Small-framed and cheerful, Mercy is far more than she appears to be, and much less fragile than anyone, except Nicholas, her only blood relative, imagines. Mercy is capable, smart and enthusiastic. Southern dialect.
Dr. Clay Male Supporting 40-55 Race Open
Dr. Clay is tall, gaunt, and terrifying. A chunk of his face has been replaced by a mechanical eye, the result of a gunfight with a much younger Guinivere. Clay is cold as the grave, and driven with a lust for conquest. He is power-mad in an intense, understated way.
Symphony Furst Female 20-30 Race Open Day Player
Tall and lither, Symphony is an assassin, and a crack shot. She is from somewhere in Eastern Europe with an accent to match. Slightly sarcastic. Eastern European dialect.
The Myrmidon Male 20-40 Caucasian Supporting
While the Myrmidon does not speak, it is central to the main scene of the short. Akin to a mechanical zombie, this actor will be wearing major makeup and prosthetics. Should be huge – over 6’ at least – and strongly built. Mime and movement experience a plus. Must have a shaved head, or be willing to shave his head. A great part for a stunt performer, dancer or very athletic model looking for an incredibly distinct shoot for their book/reel and an utterly unique experience.
